The Iraqi journalists Rights Defending Association Condemns the assault against a fellow reporter Qahtan Adnan ,the correspondent of Al-Taakhi newspaper, on Tuesday by members of Iraqi Army in Bab Al-Muaatham intersection in the center of Baghdad. The Association referred that the assault took place after Adnan s attempt to photograph the mentioned intersection as a part of his investigation about the traffic jams in Baghdad. The Association noted that the military force arrested the correspondent and took him to the police station in the region after ill-treatment by directing various kinds of insults and curses against him and the institution he works in. The army elements did not take into account the labels and press identities carried by colleague Qahtan. The Association also pointed out that the army elements released colleague Qahtan Adnan after two hours of detention and forced him to write a pledge not to take pictures again in this intersection. The Association affirms its rejection and condemnation of such unjustifiable acts that are incompatible with press freedom in getting information which is guaranteed by the new Iraqi constitution and calls for officials to put an end to such practices, which is about to turn into an Iraqi phenomenon and to fulfill their promises and claims of respecting the press and journalists and invites them to apply these claims on the ground.
